  12. It seems that a lot of Amiga users are asking for help on how to read/write
  13. a PC or a Macintosh formatted ZIP disk; now you have here the 2 mountlists
  14. that all the world was looking for and a brief explanation on how to use them!
  15.  
  16. I have to say that English is not my first language, so it's possible that
  17. you aren't going to read a Shakespear-like text;-)
  18.

  20. Using the mountlists:

  22.  
  23. Simply copy the mountlists (including the icon file;-) to the
  24. Devs/DOSDrivers or the Storage/DOSDrivers directory of your boot disk.
  25. (if you don't like the MagicWB-like icons, simply change them;-)
  26.  
  27. If you are still using a 1.2 or 1.3 Workbench, you have to edit your
  28. Devs/Mountlist file and insert here the ZIP mountlists.
  29.  
  30. It's obvious that you have to have CrossDOS and/or CrossMAC installed to
  31. use these mountlists!
  32.  
  33. - CrossDOS is shipped with any new Amiga and with any Amiga equipped with the
  34.   Workbench 2.1 or better.
  35. - CrossMAC is a commercial product, you can buy it from any good Amiga shop!

  38. Attaching an IOMEGA ZIP drive to your AMIGA:

  41. You can add a _SCSI_ ZIP drive to your Amiga simply by buying the drive,
  42. buying a SCSI controller (if you have a A3000 you already have an
  43. integrated SCSI controller, if not you can easily buy a SCSI card for all
  44. the Amiga models) and connecting the two using the supplied 25-25 SCSI
  45. cable (you'll find the SCSI cable into the original ZIP box).
  46. Make sure that both the Amiga and the ZIP are turned off when you connect
  47. the cable!

  49. !!!! At present is _NOT_ possible to use a PARALLEL Zip drive with an Amiga
  50. !!!! computer, so don't buy one !!!
  51.  
  52. Before turning on your computer, make sure to set correctly the ID number
  53. and the termination of the ZIP drive (if the ZIP is the only external SCSI
  54. unit that you have attached, turn _ON_ the termination!).
  55. When turning on the Amiga and the ZIP drive, it's possible that your Amiga
  56. will not boot and the SCSI led (the red one) of the ZIP drive is on:  it
  57. means that you have 2 SCSI units that are using the same ID:  simply turn
  58. of the computer and the ZIP and change the ZIP's SCSI ID.  (you can set it
  59. to 5 or 6).

  62. Formatting your first Amiga ZIP disk:

  65. Here is an explanation on how to format a ZIP disk with your Amiga using
  66. the HDToolBox program: (you can find HDToolBox in the Tools drawer)
  67.  
  68. 1. boot your AMIGA with a ZIP disk already inserted into the ZIP drive,
  69.     or insert a disk before starting HDToolBox;
  70.  
  71. 2. start HDToolBox;
  72.  
  73. 3. select the SCSI address where you have connected the ZIP drive
  74.    (you have ony two choices: 5 or 6)
  75.  
  76. 4. Press the "Change Drive Type" button, then select the "Define New..."
  77.     option;
  78.  
  79. 5. Press the "Read Configuration" button, HDToolbox will read all the
  80.     necessary informations directly from the ZIP drive;
  81.  
  82. 6. Press "OK", then "OK" another time:  you have just defined a new disk
  83.     type for the ZIP drive.  The next time you have to format a ZIP disk you
  84.     can skip directly to the next phase, you don't have to redefine a new 
  85.     Drive Type.

  87. 7. From here you can use the ZIP disk just like an hard disk:  you can
  88.     create/erase new partitions with the "Partition Drive" option, you can
  89.     make a ZIP disk autobooting, etc.
  90.  
  91. 8. when you have finished partitioning the disk, press the "Save Changes to
  92.     Drive" button to save the configuration to the ZIP disk.
  93.  
  94. 9. return to AmigaOS and format the new disk; you can make a "FAST FORMAT"
  95.     or, if you want to verify the whole disk, make a format with VERIFY ON.
  96.     (if you have problems ith the Workbench format, ie you can't select the
  97.     ZIP drive from the device's list, open a SHELL and format the disk
  98.     with the CLI _Format_ command)

  101. Mounting a PC/Macintosh ZIP drive:

  104. You have 2 choices:
  105.  
  106. * open a SHELL window and type:
  107.         Mount ZIPPC:            or
  108.         Mount ZIPMAC:
  109.  
  110. * Doubleclick the ZIPPC or the ZIPMAC icon that you have moved to the
  111.    Devs/DOSDrivers drawer.

  114. Reading/Writing an IBM/Macintosh formatted ZIP disk:

  117. Simply insert the ZIP disk, mount the corresponding device (ZIPPC or
  118. ZIPMAC) and start using the ZIP disk like it was an Amiga formatted one!
  119. Depending of the SCSI controller that you are using, it's possible that
  120. your Amiga will not show the disk that you have just inserted into the ZIP
  121. drive: don't panic! Simply open a SHELL indow and type:
  122.         Diskchange ZIPPC:       or
  123.         Diskchange ZIPMAC:

  125. It's even possible that you have to type this more than one time..

  128. Other usefull (?) ZIP stuff:

  131. - You can find a lot of beutiful disk icons for the ZIP disks on Aminet:
  132.     simply search the Aminet INDEX file with a "ZIP" keyword.
  133.     (Exe: KipsZip.lha, MWBZipIcon.lha, ZIP-Icons.lha)

  135. - To mount/unmount a ZIP partition you can use the very usefull SCSIMounter
  136.     utility: aminet/disk/misc/SCSIMounter203.lha
  137.  
  138. - There are at least 2 commercial packages for the Iomega ZIP drives, one
  139.     from Hisoft and other from ???  (sorry, but I don't remember the other 
  140.     firm name;-).
  141.     With these you can easily format, eject, lock, unlock, password protect
  142.     a ZIP disk.
